Biography
When children and adolescents feel truly and genuinely understood, it take the intensity out of the emotions they are fighting and helps them better understand themselves and their environment in the their therapeutic journey feel empowered. Seeking out a qualified practitioner is the first step in this journey. Through art, play, and talk and with a safe, nurturing, and attuned therapist a child who once struggled to express and process their emotions and experiences can communicate though the natural language of play. Child-Centered Play Therapy is a theoretical model with an underpinning of research used to help facilitate growth. Through the therapeutic power of play child and adolescents explore and express various feelings, thoughts, behaviors, and experiences through play—a child’s natural mode of communication which helps promote healing, growth, understanding, and development. It is a strengths based perspective which honors and respects each and every child’s special and unique needs and gifts in a safe and developmentally appropriate relationship with a therapist trained in play therapy. Also utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with adolescents more comfortable with verbal expression and expressive arts. Person-Centered counseling utilizes the three main tenets of congruence, unconditional positive regard, and empathy in the therapeutic alliance with the child to help promote growth and aligns with the natural way in which child express themselves—play. Play Therapy is a widely accepted, respected, and researched method to work with children and adolescents promoting growth and change as the child recognizes conscious and unconscious aspects of self and challenges that impact their present life and relationships.
