Frequently asked questions
What does our first session look like?
Our first session is focused on getting to know you and understanding what brings you to therapy. We will discuss your concerns, strengths, goals, and any challenges you are currently facing. This is a safe, nonjudgmental space where you can share at your own pace. Together, we will identify areas of focus, answer any questions you may have, and begin creating a personalized treatment plan. My goal is for you to leave feeling heard, supported, and hopeful about the path forward.
What if my child or teen won't open up to you?
It is completely normal for children and teens to feel nervous, hesitant, or unsure about therapy at first. Building trust takes time, and I never force a child to talk before they are ready. Instead, I focus on creating a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where they can feel comfortable being themselves. Through conversation, activities, play-based techniques, and genuine connection, most children and teens gradually begin to open up. My priority is building rapport first, because meaningful progress happens when a child feels understood, respected, and safe.
How do you decide together when therapy is done?
Therapy is a collaborative process, and we decide together when treatment goals have been met. Throughout therapy, we regularly review progress, discuss improvements, and assess whether concerns are still impacting daily life. When you or your child is consistently using coping skills independently, symptoms have significantly improved, and goals have been achieved, we will discuss transitioning to less frequent sessions or discharge. My goal is to ensure you feel confident, supported, and prepared to maintain progress beyond therapy.
Do you give homework or practice between sessions?
I do not typically assign traditional homework. Instead, I encourage clients to practice the coping skills and techniques learned during sessions in their daily lives. This may include reflecting on experiences, identifying triggers, noticing patterns in thoughts and emotions, and applying new strategies when challenges arise. For children and teens, parent collaboration is an important part of the process, as consistent support and reinforcement at home can greatly enhance progress.
How will I know if therapy is working?
You will know therapy is working when you begin noticing positive changes in daily life, such as improved mood, better emotional regulation, healthier coping skills, stronger relationships, increased confidence, and a greater ability to manage challenges. For children and teens, progress may also be seen through improved behavior, communication, school performance, or family interactions. Throughout treatment, we regularly review goals and discuss progress to ensure therapy remains effective and aligned with your needs.
How long does therapy typically take?
The length of therapy varies based on each person's unique needs, goals, and circumstances. Some clients experience meaningful improvement within a few months, while others benefit from longer-term support. Factors such as the nature of the concerns, consistency in attending sessions, use of coping skills, and available support systems can all influence progress. Together, we will regularly review goals and progress to determine the most appropriate course and duration of treatment.
How often will you communicate with me as a parent?
Communication with parents occurs as needed and is tailored to the needs of the child and family. I welcome parent involvement and encourage caregivers to reach out with questions, concerns, or important updates between sessions. While maintaining appropriate therapeutic boundaries and confidentiality, I strive to collaborate with parents to support progress, address concerns, and ensure we are working together toward shared goals.
How do you handle confidentiality with teens?
Building trust is essential when working with teens. I provide a safe and supportive space where they can speak openly about their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. While I encourage teens to communicate with their parents, what is shared in therapy is generally kept confidential to help foster honesty and trust. Parents will be informed of safety concerns, significant risks, or situations that legally require disclosure. My goal is to balance a teen’s privacy with parental involvement in a way that supports healthy growth, communication, and safety.

This is Aidan’s dad. I want to say that I’ve seen a real change in my son’s attitude, confidence, and overall happiness. He hasn’t shared much about his sessions with me, but it clearly seems to be helping him. I still think he needs support with prioritizing and avoiding procrastination, but seeing him consistently smiling again and being his joking, laughing self is a blessing, and I’ll gladly take it.
