Frequently asked questions
What does our first session look like?
Your first session is an intake appointment, so it will look a little different from future sessions. We'll discuss what brings you to therapy, review your personal and mental health history, explore your current concerns, and identify your goals for treatment. This session is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and get a sense of my approach. Together, we'll begin creating a plan tailored to your needs and goals.
How do you handle confidentiality with teens?
Building trust is essential, so I keep what teens share in therapy private whenever possible. I encourage open communication with parents while also respecting the teen's need for a confidential space. If there are concerns about safety—such as risk of harm to themselves or others—or situations required by law, I will involve parents or appropriate parties to help keep everyone safe.
How often will you communicate with me as a parent?
I believe parents play an important role in a child's progress. I'll provide periodic updates, discuss treatment goals, and collaborate with you as needed while respecting your child's confidentiality. If concerns about safety or significant changes arise, I'll communicate with you promptly. We can also schedule parent check-ins when additional support or guidance would be helpful.
What if my child or teen won't open up to you?
It's common for children and teens to take time to feel comfortable in therapy. Building trust is an important part of the process, and I never force conversations before they're ready. I meet each child where they are, using approaches that match their age and personality. As trust grows, most children and teens become more comfortable sharing and engaging in therapy.
How long does therapy typically take?
The length of therapy varies based on your goals, concerns, and progress. Some people find short-term therapy helpful for a specific challenge, while others benefit from longer-term support for ongoing growth or more complex concerns. We'll regularly review your progress together and adjust our work to best meet your needs.
