Frequently asked questions

What does the first session look like?

We will explore your present therapeutic goals and needs. We will look at your history of mental health concerns to be clear on what we are needing to address. Then we will start developing a treatment plan. If I am working with a child or teen I will focus on building rapport. Then I will want to talk with a parent without the child present.

How will I know if therapy is working?

First we will be looking for a significant reduction in the concerns and symptoms that brought you into therapy. Second we will looking at how you are implementing the insights and skills into your daily life.

As you progress and things changes we will be flexible to manage your on going needs.

If you don't feel therapy is working we will talk about it and figure out why?

What if my child or teen won't open up to you?

We will work to find a common interest and topic to talk about. If we cannot find one and they continue to resist I will working on coaching the parents or possibly refer to a in-person therapist.

How do you handle confidentiality with teens?

I tell the teen that if a parent needs to know something I feel is in their best interest I will make sure they know it. I will ask the teen if they want to meet with the parent or have me discuss it with the parent. They don't have a choice about the parents needing to be aware of something such as suicidal intent, plans to run away. drug use, and other possible dangerous situations. They get to choose how the parents will hear about it. I try to get the teen to share it with their parents.

How long does therapy typically take?

After three sessions we should know if therapy is working. Then the actual length of therapy is based on the concerns that are needing to be addressed.

How often will you communicate with me as a parent?

As often as needed. I appreciate up-dates and information about what is happening and what is needed. I encourage parents to schedule a session or two without their child so we can talk freely.

Do you give homework or practice between sessions?

I like to work with projects, activities that we can use to practice the skills we are learning. Is there usually a specific homework assignment. Probably not, but we will work with the same themes and how they are being addressed from session to session.

How do you decide together when therapy is done?

It is rare, but nice when we can discuss the ending of therapy. Most clients just stop scheduling. One thing I am looking for is the conversation that is about "normal" life events being handled in ways that work. And when it become a session of chitchat, I usually talk about ending therapy.

I appreciated that he really zoomed in on the issues and got my feedback on what was important to me. Where many therapists talk just to talk, he asked insightful questions to see what the priorities are.

Dr. Skidmore was very kind. He got more out of my son in the first session than his prior therapist did in 3 months. I truly think he will be a great fit for my son, and I look forward to seeing the progress that can be made

The session was conducted well. My concern is my child isn’t transparent in these sessions. We discussed his reactions to things and after the call he was angry, saying I had lied, to the point that he broke a plate, tried to destroy a rug and furniture. We explained we would take his gaming device for the remainder of the week, which we did as he responded poorly. After some hateful comments and cussing, he calmed down and we worked on his homework together.

Dr. Jon introduced me to the Internal Family Systems (IFS) Framework in a way that really made sense. He explained it with care and clarity, and it gave me a whole new perspective on how to understand and work with the different parts of myself. It was one of the most insightful sessions I’ve had so far.
