About child therapists in North Carolina

Most parents start looking for a child therapist in the middle of something hard. A kindergartener melts down every morning before school. A nine-year-old will not sleep in her own bed anymore. A fourth grader’s teacher keeps emailing home, and you have run out of things to try. If that is where you are, you are not behind and you have not missed something obvious. This is when families usually come.

The clinicians on this page work with school-age children, are licensed in North Carolina, and are accepting new clients. Therapy at this age does not look like an hour of sitting and talking. It leans on play, drawing, games, and small pieces of practice between sessions, because a seven-year-old will show you what is wrong long before they can explain it.

You are part of the work, not an audience for it. Most clinicians here meet with parents regularly so that what happens in session carries over to bedtime, homework, and the school run. Every clinician listed is licensed in North Carolina and bills insurance, and every session happens by video. For a lot of families, that is the difference between a weekly appointment and no appointment at all.

Child Therapists in North Carolina: common questions

How much does child therapy cost in North Carolina?
Emora is in-network with most major commercial plans, and with Medicaid in several states. Once your plan is applied, most families pay between $0 and $35 per session. You can check what your own plan covers before you book at /cost-estimate. There is no membership fee, and matching with a clinician is free.
What is the difference between a child therapist, a child psychologist, and a child psychiatrist?
A child therapist provides talk and play therapy. They are usually a licensed clinical social worker, professional counselor, or marriage and family therapist. A child psychologist has a doctorate and can also do formal testing, which is how an ADHD, autism, or learning diagnosis gets made. A child psychiatrist, or a psychiatric nurse practitioner, is a prescriber who can start and manage medication. The clinicians on this page are therapists. If it turns out your child needs testing or a prescriber, your therapist can refer you inside Emora, so you are not starting your search over.
What ages do child therapists on this page work with?
This page lists clinicians who work with school-age children. Age ranges vary from clinician to clinician, and each provider card shows the ages that clinician actually sees, so you can check before you book. If your child is a teenager, the teen therapy page for North Carolina is a better fit. Emora also has clinicians who work with toddlers and preschoolers.
How quickly can my child be seen?
Only clinicians who are licensed in North Carolina and currently accepting new clients appear on this page. Each provider card shows that clinician’s own next open times, pulled from their live calendar rather than quoted as a general wait time. Some have something this week and some are further out. Many families book a first session within about 48 hours.
Are sessions virtual or in person?
All sessions are virtual, over secure video. Your child joins from home, which takes out the drive, the waiting room, and the missed afternoon of school. You will need a private space and a device with a camera. A tablet or a laptop works. Emora does not have physical clinics.
