Frequently asked questions

What does our first session look like?

Our first session is all about comfort, connection, and collaboration. There’s no pressure to dive into your deepest wounds right away; we go at your pace. We will review paperwork briefly, but mostly, it’s a space for me to listen to what brings you in and what your goals look like.

We’ll explore what’s currently feeling heavy, what strengths you already have, and how we can work together to build resilience. Think of it as a low-pressure conversation to ensure we are a good fit and to start mapping out a path toward your healing and growth.

How long does therapy typically take?

There is no one-size-fits-all timeline, as healing is completely unique to you. The duration of therapy depends on your specific goals, the complexity of what you're processing, and your readiness for change.

Some clients find that a few months of weekly sessions give them the immediate tools and mindset shifts they need to navigate a specific transition. Others choose longer-term deeper work to break old patterns, process trauma, and build lasting resilience. We will check in regularly to evaluate your progress and decide together what timeline best supports your growth.

How will I know if therapy is working?

Progress in therapy isn’t about suddenly having zero problems; it’s about how you navigate them. You’ll know it’s working when you notice subtle, steady shifts: catching old patterns in the moment, setting healthy boundaries with less guilt, and bouncing back faster from triggers. The voice in your head will become kinder, replacing harsh self-criticism with resilience and self-compassion. Ultimately, you’ll feel more grounded in your worth and equipped for life’s ups and downs. We will collaborate and check in regularly to ensure our work supports your growth.

How often will you communicate with me as a parent?

As a parent, you are a vital part of your child’s growth. We will establish a clear communication plan during our first session that respects your child’s therapeutic privacy while keeping you informed. Generally, you can expect brief updates at the start or end of sessions, or dedicated parent check-ins every few weeks to discuss progress, tools for home, and how we can collaborate. If any safety concerns arise, I will contact you immediately. My goal is to ensure you feel supported, equipped, and connected to your child's healing journey throughout our time together.

What if my child or teen won't open up to you?

It is entirely normal for kids and teens to feel hesitant or protective at first. Building trust takes time, and I never force it. Instead, I meet them exactly where they are—using their interests, creativity, or humor to connect on their terms.

I focus on creating a completely safe, non-judgmental space where they feel truly heard, not fixed. Often, once they realize therapy is a place where they have a voice and control over their own story, the walls naturally begin to come down. We will go at their pace, and I will collaborate with you along the way to support them.

Do you give homework or practice between sessions?

Yes, but it is always collaborative and tailored to where your teen is at. Therapy is a weekly hour, but real growth happens in the everyday moments between sessions. When appropriate—and if your teen is open to it—I might suggest small, practical "experiments" or reflections to try at home.

This could be practicing a specific coping tool, tracking a habit, or noticing a mindset shift. If they feel overwhelmed, we skip it. The goal is never to add stress or a heavy chore, but to give them manageable ways to practice building resilience and self-worth on their own terms.

How do you decide together when therapy is done?

We look at graduation from therapy as a milestone to celebrate, and it’s a decision we make together. From our first session, we identify what your goals look like in real life. We will regularly check in to see how you're feeling and track your growth.

You’ll know you’re ready when the tools we practice become second nature, you feel grounded in your worth, and you bounce back from challenges with more resilience and self-compassion. Often, we’ll slowly taper sessions down to biweekly or monthly to ensure you feel confident, steady, and fully equipped to maintain your progress.

How do you handle confidentiality with teens?

Trust is everything in teen therapy. To create a space where your teen feels safe opening up, our sessions are confidential. However, this is a partnership, and safety is non-negotiable. If your teen shares anything indicating they are a danger to themselves or others, or that someone is hurting them, I will break confidentiality to protect them and loop you in immediately.

For everyday growth, I encourage teens to share breakthroughs with you themselves. We will balance giving them the privacy they need to heal with keeping you connected and informed as a parent.
