Frequently asked questions
What does our first session look like?
Our first session is a space for you to breathe, share your story, and feel heard without judgment. We’ll talk about what’s been going on, the challenges you’re facing, your goals for therapy, and what support looks like for you. You do not have to have everything figured out before starting. My goal is to create a safe, supportive, and comfortable environment where we can begin building trust and helping you feel more like yourself again.
How will I know if therapy is working?
You may notice therapy is working when you begin responding to situations differently, feeling more emotionally aware, setting healthier boundaries, improving communication, or feeling less overwhelmed day to day. Progress can look like better coping skills, increased confidence, improved relationships, reduced anxiety or stress, or simply feeling more like yourself again. Healing is not always linear, but together we will track growth, celebrate progress, and adjust goals as needed throughout the process.
How do you handle confidentiality with teens?
Confidentiality is very important in my work with teens. I strive to create a safe space where teens feel comfortable being open and honest. Information shared in sessions is kept private unless there are safety concerns such as risk of harm to themselves, harm to others, abuse, or situations required by law. I also believe in working collaboratively with parents while respecting the teen’s need for trust, privacy, and emotional safety throughout the therapy process.
How often will you communicate with me as a parent?
Communication with parents depends on the needs of the teen and family. I believe in maintaining a healthy balance between keeping parents informed and protecting the trust and emotional safety of the teen in therapy. Parents can expect updates regarding progress, goals, concerns, and support strategies when appropriate, while also respecting the teen’s confidentiality. If safety concerns arise, communication will happen immediately to ensure proper support and care.
How long does therapy typically take?
Therapy looks different for everyone, so the length of treatment depends on your goals, needs, and the challenges you are facing. Some clients benefit from short-term support for a specific issue or life transition, while others choose longer-term therapy for deeper healing and personal growth. Progress is something we will regularly check in on together, and sessions will move at a pace that feels supportive and realistic for you or your child.
What if my child or teen won't open up to you?
It’s completely normal for some children or teens to take time to open up in therapy. Building trust is a process, and I never force conversations before a client feels ready. I focus on creating a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental space where they can feel comfortable at their own pace. Sometimes connection starts through small conversations, humor, activities, or simply feeling understood. My goal is to meet them where they are while helping them slowly build trust, emotional safety, and confidence in the process.
How do you decide together when therapy is done?
Therapy is a collaborative process, and together we will regularly check in on progress, goals, and overall emotional well-being. Signs therapy may be coming to an end can include improved coping skills, healthier communication, reduced symptoms, increased confidence, and feeling more able to manage challenges independently. My goal is to ensure clients feel supported, prepared, and confident before ending services, while also reminding them that returning to therapy in the future is always okay if needed.
Do you give homework or practice between sessions?
Yes, at times I may suggest small exercises, coping strategies, journaling prompts, communication tools, or self care activities between sessions to help support growth outside of therapy. Homework is always collaborative and tailored to your goals, comfort level, and current needs. The purpose is never perfection, but helping you build awareness, practice new skills, and apply what we discuss in real life at a pace that feels manageable and supportive.
