Frequently asked questions

What does our first session look like?

The first session focuses on getting to know you, understanding your concerns, reviewing relevant history, and identifying goals for therapy. For children and adolescents, caregivers are included in the intake process as appropriate.

How often will you communicate with me as a parent?

For children and adolescents, I collaborate with parents or caregivers as needed while maintaining appropriate confidentiality to support the client’s trust and progress. Communication varies based on clinical needs and age.

Do you give homework or practice between sessions?

Yes. When helpful, I may assign coping skills, reflection exercises, or practical strategies to support progress between sessions for both children and adults.

How do you decide together when therapy is done?

We regularly review progress and treatment goals together. Therapy ends when goals are met, symptoms have improved, and the client feels confident using skills independently, and we collaboratively plan for discharge.

How do you handle confidentiality with teens?

I maintain confidentiality to build trust with teens while also involving parents or caregivers as appropriate. I share general progress and safety-related concerns, but specific session details are kept private unless there is a safety risk or other legal/ethical requirement.

How long does therapy typically take?

The length of therapy varies based on each client’s needs, goals, and circumstances. Some clients benefit from short-term support, while others engage in longer-term therapy. We regularly review progress to determine what is most helpful.
