About teen psychiatric clinicians in Florida

Prescribing for a teenager is a different conversation than prescribing for a nine-year-old, and the person it has to convince is your teen. Parents usually reach this page when therapy alone has stopped being enough, when an ADHD diagnosis needs a prescriber’s read, or when a medication started years ago no longer fits the person taking it.

The clinicians here are psychiatric prescribers licensed in Florida, most of them psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners. A first appointment is a long assessment: symptom history, what school and home are each seeing, sleep, substances, what has been tried already, family history, and what your teen actually thinks about taking medication. That last one is not a courtesy question. It is the thing that decides whether any of this works.

Adolescence is when sticking with a medication becomes the real variable, so these clinicians spend time on side effects, on what to do about a missed dose, and on what your teen is willing to live with. Some visits end in a trial with a set follow-up schedule. Some end in a recommendation to change something else first. Visits are virtual and insurance is billed.

Teen Psychiatry in Florida: common questions

How much does teen psychiatry cost in Florida?
Emora is in-network with most major commercial plans, and with Medicaid in several states. Once your plan is applied, most families pay between $0 and $35 per session. You can check what your own plan covers before you book at /cost-estimate. There is no membership fee, and matching with a clinician is free.
What is the difference between a psychiatric clinician and my teen’s therapist?
A psychiatric clinician is a prescriber, either a psychiatrist or a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. They diagnose, prescribe and manage medication, monitor side effects, and coordinate with your pediatrician. A therapist provides talk therapy and does not prescribe. For most teenagers, the evidence supports using both together rather than either one alone. This page lists the prescribers. Emora therapists are on the teen therapy page for Florida.
What ages do these prescribers work with?
Adolescents. Each provider card shows that clinician’s own age range. Younger children are on the child psychiatry page for Florida. Several of these prescribers also see young adults, which matters when your teen is heading to college and does not want to change clinicians in the middle of it.
Can my teen have part of the appointment without me?
Yes, and most prescribers here structure it that way, with some time together and some time with your teen alone. Confidentiality for adolescents is set by state law and it has limits, particularly around safety. Your clinician will lay out at the first visit exactly what stays between them and your teen in Florida and what does not, so nobody is guessing.
Can ADHD medication be prescribed over video, and how fast can we be seen?
Only prescribers accepting new patients appear here, and each card shows their live openings. Many families book an initial evaluation within about 48 hours. Routine psychiatric medication is prescribed and managed by video and sent electronically to your pharmacy. Controlled substances, including the stimulants used for ADHD, are governed by federal and state rules that differ by state and change from time to time, and your prescriber will tell you at the first visit what applies in Florida.

I felt the provider was very in tune with what was going on with my daughter and asked a lot of questions to try to assess her current behavioral health situation. I was very pleased with this providers visit today.

I absolutely loved her and it was so helpful and I felt so heard. I loved that when she found out I was a Christian she shared with me that she is also a believer. I am excited for my journey with her and she gave me hope when I have been feeling hopeless for so long!
