Frequently asked questions
What does our first session look like?
Clients can expect a welcoming conversation where we begin to understand what brought them to therapy, what their goals are, and what they hope to change or improve. We also explore which therapeutic approaches may be the best fit, and I encourage clients to share openly about what feels comfortable for them.
How often will you communicate with me as a parent?
I believe parent involvement is an important part of the therapeutic process, especially with children and teens. Communication with parents typically occurs through periodic check-ins, treatment updates, and collaboration around goals and progress while still maintaining the child or teen’s therapeutic privacy.
How long does therapy typically take?
The length of therapy varies depending on each client’s needs, goals, and level of support required. Some clients benefit from short-term therapy focused on specific concerns, while others may benefit from longer-term support for ongoing emotional growth and healing.
What if my child or teen won't open up to you?
That is completely normal, especially in the beginning. Building trust takes time, and I meet clients at their comfort level without pressure. I use a warm, supportive, and collaborative approach to help children and teens feel safe enough to gradually express themselves in their own way and at their own pace.
Do you give homework or practice between sessions?
Yes, when appropriate. I may encourage clients to practice coping skills, grounding exercises, journaling, communication strategies, or other techniques between sessions to help reinforce progress and build confidence using skills in everyday situations.
How will I know if therapy is working?
Progress in therapy can look different for each person, but common signs include improved emotional regulation, reduced anxiety or stress, healthier coping skills, stronger relationships, increased confidence, and better functioning at home, school, or work. Throughout treatment, we regularly review goals, discuss changes you are noticing, and track progress together to ensure therapy continues to meet your needs.
How do you decide together when therapy is done?
Therapy goals are reviewed regularly throughout treatment. Together, we look at progress, symptom improvement, coping abilities, and overall functioning to determine when goals have been met and the client feels ready to transition out of therapy or move to less frequent sessions.

Nancy makes me feel like the concerns I have for my child are valid. I feel safe telling her when I see behavior changes or when I’m concerned for my child. She never judges she hears my concerns and takes action on them quickly.

Really good initial session with Nancy - we just weren't sure what to expect, and it probably couldn't have gone better!! She was able to get our son talking and opening up about surprise insights we'd not heard about...looking forward to next!

We have very high hopes for this therapy. My son felt comfortable opening up and speaking freely during his sessions, which has been incredibly meaningful for us. He has already started applying the techniques he’s been taught to better manage his stress.

We like how Ms. Nancy redirects the focus when needed! We also like the suggested substitute for fidgeting without an object, as this is very helpful in class when we cannot have items.

Nancy was amazing! She was kind, empathetic, a good listener and she made my son feel so comfortable to share. He did not want to do counseling but by the end of it he didn’t want the session to end! He said “that was so good. I loved it.” Thank you, Nancy!
