Frequently asked questions

What does our first session look like?

Our first session is all about getting to know you and understanding what brings you to therapy. We will talk about your concerns, your goals, and any challenges you may be experiencing. I will also gather some background information to better understand your experiences and strengths. My goal is to create a comfortable, supportive space where you feel heard and understood. There is no pressure to share everything at once—we will move at a pace that feels right for you and begin building a plan that supports your needs and goals.

How will I know if therapy is working?

Therapy looks different for everyone, but progress often shows up in small, meaningful ways. You may notice improvements in your mood, relationships, coping skills, confidence, or ability to manage challenges. Together, we will identify goals and regularly check in on your progress. Sometimes growth is not always linear, but over time you may find yourself responding differently to situations, feeling more in control of your emotions, and making choices that align with your values and goals.

How often will you communicate with me as a parent?

I view parents as important partners in the therapy process. I provide updates as needed regarding progress, goals, and ways to support your child, while also respecting your child's privacy. If concerns arise, I encourage open communication so we can work together to best support your child.

What if my child or teen won't open up to you?

It's completely normal for children and teens to take time to feel comfortable in therapy. Building trust is an important part of the process, and I meet each client where they are. Through conversation, activities, and a supportive environment, I focus on creating a space where they feel safe, understood, and ready to open up at their own pace. There is never pressure to share before they are ready.

How do you handle confidentiality with teens?

Confidentiality is essential for building trust with teens. What is discussed in session generally remains private, allowing them to feel safe being open and honest. Parents will receive updates about progress and important themes, but specific details are kept confidential unless there is a safety concern involving the teen or someone else. My goal is to balance a teen's need for privacy with a parent's need to stay informed and involved.

Do you give homework or practice between sessions?

Depending on a client's goals, I may suggest activities, coping skills, or strategies to practice between sessions. These are designed to help reinforce what we are working on in therapy and support growth outside of our time together. Any practice is tailored to the client's age, needs, and comfort level.

How long does therapy typically take?

The length of therapy varies for each person and depends on their goals, needs, and circumstances. Some clients benefit from short-term support focused on a specific concern, while others choose to engage in therapy longer to work through ongoing challenges and personal growth. We will regularly review progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.

How do you decide together when therapy is done?

Therapy is typically complete when a client has made meaningful progress toward their goals, feels confident using the skills they've learned, and is able to manage challenges more independently. We will regularly review progress together and make a collaborative decision about when it feels appropriate to reduce sessions or conclude therapy.
