Frequently asked questions
What does our first session look like?
Our first session will start with the caregiver(s) and child together, where we discuss boundaries, what therapy is, any important information the caregiver wants to give me (with or without the child present), and everyone's goal for therapy. After those are discussed, if the child is comfortable, we continue the intake with no adults! Building a trusting relationship between your child and me is the first and most important step, which usually happens best when the child can be unfiltered and feels a sense of privacy.
How do you handle confidentiality with teens?
While caregivers legally have access to all their teen's medical records, I encourage them to let this be a private space for their teen and to trust that I will contact them directly or bring them into a session if it's something pertaining to safety, risk behaviors, substance use, and any other behaviors that were established in the first session as something the parent would like to be notified of.
