Frequently asked questions

What does our first session look like?

Your first session at Emora Health Care is designed to help your family feel comfortable. We begin by meeting with you to learn about your child’s strengths, challenges, and daily experiences. This helps us understand what brought you in and what you hope to see improve. You’ll complete intake forms so we can discuss why you’re seeking therapy and then I will observe how your child plays, communicates, and responds in the space. We’ll explain how therapy works, the methods we may use, and how you’ll be involved. Together, we’ll set goals and outline next steps tailored to your child’s needs.

How will I know if therapy is working?

Therapy is working when you start seeing steady, meaningful changes in your child’s daily life. At Emora Health Care, we look for signs like improved emotional regulation, fewer conflicts, better communication, and increased confidence. Your child may handle stress more calmly, use coping skills on their own, or show progress toward goals we set together. We review these changes with you regularly so you always know how things are moving forward.

How often will you communicate with me as a parent?

I communicate with you so you always feel informed. You’ll receive brief session updates that highlight themes we explored, skills practiced, and any concerns that may need attention at home or school. We schedule monthly parent check‑ins to review progress, adjust goals, and talk through anything new your child is experiencing. If something important comes up during or between sessions, I provide outreach so you’re never left wondering. You’re also encouraged to contact anytime with questions or updates, because therapy works best when we collaborate closely to support your child’s growth.

What if my child or teen won't open up to you?

It is common for teens to not open up right away. It's vital to build a rapport and develop trust. A teen needs to see that the therapist is authentic and genuinely cares. When a child or teen won’t open up, stay calm and keep the door open. Pressure shuts them down. Use small, low‑stakes moments—car rides, chores, shared hobbies—to talk. Listen more than you speak. Validate feelings even if you disagree. Avoid lectures. Share a bit about your own day to model openness. If they still stay closed off, try gentle approach and have patience.

How do you handle confidentiality with teens?

I keep teen conversations private while balancing parent involvement. Teens need space to talk openly, but safety is never secret. If a teen is at risk of harm, parents are informed immediately. Therapists also encourage shared updates so families stay aligned. This approach builds trust, supports growth, and keeps everyone focused on the teen’s wellbeing.

Do you give homework or practice between sessions?

Yes home practice helps reinforce skills between sessions, but it’s always tailored to your child’s needs and comfort level. Parent communication is steady and I provide check‑ins after sessions, share progress updates, and reach out whenever something important comes up so you always feel informed and supported.

In the first session, we take time to understand your child’s history, strengths, challenges, and goals. We’ll talk through what brought you to therapy, answer your questions, and create a clear plan together.
