Frequently asked questions

How often will you communicate with me as a parent?

I would like for the parent or guardian to feel that they can reach out to me any time. Emora does offer a chat feature in the dashboard that allows them to send messages at any time. While this is one way of communication, and in knowing that some parents are busy, I also ask that the parent try and meet with me for at least the firs few minutes prior to each session. This allows for any updates or areas of concern that need to be addressed in the counseling session to be discussed.

Do you give homework or practice between sessions?

I do like to provide the client and family with resources and worksheets that will allow for not only a more meaningful experiences, but for an opportunity for the client and family to seek out solutions and work on positive communication skills as a unit. The client will not be the only person that will learn something new. For individual adults, they too will also receive resources and depending on the need, some assignments to help.

How long does therapy typically take?

I would typically like to see a client for the full hour. For children depending on the attention and the engagement, which does play a role in the session. As the child begins to show improvement and struggles less at home and in school, the child will begin to spend less time in sessions and may have their sessions go from weekly to biweekly. For adults, an hour is typically the length and as for stepping down, the strategy is the same. The more improvement, the less time needed during and in-between each session.

How do you handle confidentiality with teens?

In allowing for confidentiality when working with teens, I feel that in building a good report with them, it is important for the parent to understand that the only time I will disclose anything to them will be when the teen has voiced any thoughts of self harming behavior, thoughts of suicide or thoughts of harming others. I do feel it is important for the parent to be present during the first few minutes of the session to discuss any concerns or wins for the week and if the teen wishes to disclose anything at the end of the session, that time will be allowed for them to do so.

What if my child or teen won't open up to you?

That all depends. Some children and teens are selective of who they want to talk to and what they want to say. I do not force any client to disclose or pressure them in any way. If myself and the parent feel that the collaboration is not working then I will work with the family to find a suitable therapist through Emora or if needed an in-person therapist in their area. The last thing I would like to see is a client shut down and not be in control of their own therapy. My hope is to work with individuals that are wanting to engage and work towards positive change when they are willing to.

How do you decide together when therapy is done?

When the client no longer needs me. It would be silly for me to say that I am like Nanny McPhee, but in all reality, that is probably the best way to describe it. When the client feels positive about the place they are in, when they receive positive feedback both in the home at school and from their peers and family members, that is when stepping down begins. When the client meets their goals and is capable of utilizing their learned coping skills and feels they are ready. My goal for each and every client is for them to be able to confidently be able to tell me they no longer need therapy.

How will I know if therapy is working?

For parents, they will know therapy is working when they see more wins in their child's week than losses. When a parent starts to see their child is happy again, engaged in family activities and is feeling positive about themselves, that is when they will begin to see that therapy is working. For adults, when they are able to recognize their strengths and feel more confident about themselves and what they are doing. Each client will be given the tools they need to succeed and each client is more than capable of achieving a happier and healthier life through therapy.

What does our first session look like?

The initial assessment will be between myself, the client and guardian. I will go over a few questions that both the guardian and client to answer. If you notice that I am engaging with the client more than you, this is because my focus is on the client. I look for how much the client is willing to communicate to me and how well they understand the reasoning for why they are in therapy. I look to build report with the client and look for ways to address the concerns with them while also allowing them to speak freely and ask questions as well. This is a meet and get to know one another session.

Harlow seemed to really like Richard. I believe she will open up more as they have more sessions but I was surprised at how much she already felt comfortable saying out loud considering it was her first therapy session ever. Richard did amazing at reassuring her it was a judgment free zone and made the learning coping skills fun and interactive.

Overall it went very well. Besides my lil man being nervous he seemed to enjoy it and was open to this new outlet. I do wish for the initial meeting I as the parent could have discussed my concerns without my kiddo right there as to not discern him. But overall it was good and im excited to see whats next! I feel very comfortable with Richard and my little only had good things to say after his first session.

Carter really liked his session and feels like virtual is going to work for him. I love that you asked him what he likes and then used that as references for helping him understand how he should behave.

The session was good. I’m glad that Richard had an opportunity to talk about issues 1 on 1 with Emma. He was able to share breathing techniques with her and help assure her that big changes can be good. He put the ball in her court to get some more information on school, and gave her ideas of people to reach out to regarding their experiences. Richard was kind and caring as well.
