Frequently asked questions
What does our first session look like?
Our first session is a chance for us to get to know each other in a comfortable, supportive, and judgment-free space. We’ll talk about what’s been going on, what brought you to therapy, and the goals or changes you’d like to work toward. You don’t need to have everything figured out before starting. My role is to help you feel heard, understood, and supported while we begin building practical tools and a plan that fits your needs and pace.
How often will you communicate with me as a parent?
I believe parent involvement and communication are important parts of the therapy process, especially for children and teens. I regularly provide updates on progress, concerns, and overall themes being addressed in treatment while also respecting your child’s need for a safe and supportive therapeutic space. The level of communication may vary based on your child’s age, needs, and treatment goals, and we can work together to find a balance that supports both your child and your family.
How do you handle confidentiality with teens?
Confidentiality is an important part of helping teens feel safe, heard, and comfortable opening up in therapy. I encourage honest communication while also maintaining appropriate parent involvement and support. Parents are typically updated on overall progress, concerns, safety issues, and treatment goals, but teens also need space to talk openly without fear that every detail will be shared. If there are concerns related to safety, self-harm, harm to others, abuse, or serious risk, confidentiality may need to be broken to ensure protection and support.
How will I know if therapy is working?
You’ll often notice progress in small but meaningful ways before major changes happen. This may include improved communication, healthier coping skills, fewer emotional outbursts, better decision-making, improved relationships, increased confidence, or your child being able to manage stress and emotions more effectively. We will also regularly review treatment goals together and discuss what is improving, what still feels challenging, and any adjustments needed to support continued growth.
How long does therapy typically take?
The length of therapy looks different for everyone and depends on your goals, the challenges being addressed, and how consistently skills are practiced outside of sessions. Some clients benefit from short-term support focused on a specific issue, while others benefit from longer-term therapy for deeper emotional, behavioral, or relationship patterns. We regularly review progress and adjust treatment as needed to ensure therapy continues to feel helpful, supportive, and goal-focused.
How do you decide together when therapy is done?
Therapy is considered complete when treatment goals have been met and the client is consistently able to manage challenges more effectively outside of sessions. This may include improved emotional regulation, healthier coping skills, better communication, stronger relationships, increased confidence, or reduced behavioral concerns. The decision is collaborative, and we regularly review progress together to determine when therapy feels supportive, effective, and no longer needed at the same level of care.
